LASIK is a laser eye surgery intended to correct and improve vision, allowing patients to reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) are caused by a misshapen cornea that cannot accurately reflect images to the retina in the back of the eye. LASIK uses lasers to permanently reshape the eye, thus increasing functionality while improving vision.
A modified LASIK procedure, Epi-LASIK offers all of the safety and vision improvement benefits of traditional LASIK to those with thin corneas. An improvement upon the procedure allows our experienced ophthalmologists to reshape the corneas of those who would not typically qualify for LASIK.
An alternative to LASIK, PRK laser eye surgery improves vision in those who are not candidates for traditional LASIK due to corneal scarring or another corneal condition. Instead of creating a flap in the cornea, as occurs in the LASIK procedure, the surgeon removes its outer layer entirely. Though PRK eliminates the risk of complications with the corneal flap, patients report increased pain and longer recovery than with traditional LASIK. After having PRK, you will notice an improvement in your vision within one to three days.
